In the early morning or New Year's Day, 1945, as the last great German offensive in the Ardennes slowly smouldered to an end, the Luftwaffe launched a surprise attack simultaneously on all the forward Allied tactical airfields. At some bases the Luftwaffe attack is devastating, destroying aircraft and rendering airstrips useless. But at Y-29 near Asch Belgium the result was unlike anything the Luftwaffe had imagined.
